No nasal bone

Postby Cal Correa » Thu May 06, 2021 11:53 am

Hi all, so I went for my NT scan(three months scan).. the doc said everything looked fine but she couldn't locate the nasal bone of the child..she said sometimes it could be visible after a few days and no signs of down syndrome as per her experience but wants me to do an NIPT test to make sure no abnormalities.. has this happened to anybody? I'm waiting to hear some experiences on this.. so disappointed and stressed now

Im just gonna say this - any actually reasonable anatomy scan is at 20 weeks. Thats when they look at all organs, head, face, each hand, each foot and so on.

Earliest at 16 weeks you can see all feet, hands, and more on face.
Do go for a private follow up scan asap, to even at least give yourself peace of mind.

So you're saying that this scan is usually optional or should I be waiting until my anomaly scan to find a more clearer picture?

No, its not optional, its a must, but, sometimes things can be missed early on.

Sometimes it could just be the position baby is in. You will see far more in later scans BUT you can always go for a private scan again within next few days and have them look closer and more detailed. Bottom line is, what will you do in case that is truly the case, and will it affect you going ahead with pregnancy or not?

Yes Allie I do plan on going for a private scan just to know where do we stand at? If things are not looking good, then we may have to decide whats next..

Have you done NIPT test yet? Have you been suggested this? They will basically only test your blood and will look for babys chromosomes in it and it would with some level of accuracy might detect some chromosomal determining factors - like gender, or anomalies. Definitely you should do that next as it is non invasive and generally not expensive either.

On another note, what about symmetry, was the scan technician/ doctor happy with brain symmetry, and everything else?

I know this can be scary and a lot of unknown, but theres no point panicking too early, it could be just that maybe it was just a shadow, or maybe everything will look perfect in few days. So for now best not to overthink anything.. Sorry cant give you more info...

12 week scan is not great for that seeing such detail. I was told by Midwife eveeything will be checked thoroughly at 20 week scan.
Teying ro see anatomy at 12 weeks let alone 11 weeks is not ideal or recommended.

No its not but, however main structures are looked at like 2 arms 2 legs, symmetrical brain start and nasal bones. While its not accurate its something major to note when they arent seen at 11/12 weeks

I think you went a bit too early too. 11 weeks is very early, most prefer after 12+5 days. I would do a follow up scan after 13 weeks or so.
